When you own a home, you have much more in the way of options in home alarm systems. Living in an apartment doesn’t mean you can’t protect yourself, however. You just need to understand the constraints you have to work with, and figure out the best possible system from there.

Here are some important factors that make apartment alarms different from house alarm systems:

You can’t make structural modifications. First and foremost, that means you’re restrained from making certain types of modifications. For example, a wired house alarm system couldn’t be installed in an apartment, because you’re not going to be able to drill through walls or ceilings. Anything you install is going to have to be surface-mounted.

You’ll have fewer points of entry. This is one of the advantages of living in an apartment. Chances are you’ve got your front door and, in some cases, one or more windows. It’s possible you’ll have a back door, but you definitely don’t need to worry about things like basement windows. Identifying points of entry should be quick and easy.

You might have to deal with interference. The most common alarm systems rely on wireless technology. If you’re in an apartment, as we mentioned, wired alarm systems aren’t really an option anyways. Unfortunately, there is always the possibility that something will interfere with the frequency, such as a neighbor’s alarm system, a WiFi access point, or something else.

Landlord security matters, too. Because there are things you can’t do to protect your apartment, you need to rely on your landlord for some security measures. For example, limiting entry to an apartment building is important. Making sure that your doors and windows are structurally sound and can’t easily be bypassed is another. Talk to your landlord about safety and security.

It’s going to cost less. Because you have fewer points of entry and (in most cases) less space to protect, you can probably get an alarm system for your apartment at a much lower price point than someone who’s installing a system to cover an entire house.

The important thing is that you protect your apartment as best you can. Take a look at some apartment alarm system options today.

There are dozens of do-it-yourself home alarm systems out there on the market. Every home improvement store you walk into sells them. You can even find them at big-box retailers like Wal-Mart. How do you know which do-it-yourself home alarm systems are right for you, and which are going to give you and your family the kind of protection you need?

You need to start with a few simple steps:

Figure out where your home is vulnerable. Standardized home alarm systems aren’t right for every home. You need to be able to identify where exactly it is that a home invader is likely to gain access to your home. Hint: it’s probably not your front door with that deadbolt lock. Identify every possible entry point, so you know where you’re going to need to place alarms.

Take some measurements. Most do-it-yourself home alarm systems have a limited range. If you have a sprawling ranch home, chances are you’re going to need to carefully consider where to place your control panel. Take measurements of your home, especially noting the location of entry points. When it comes time to buy the system, you need to verify communication ranges for each of the devices.

Decide on a budget. There are reasons you’re not hiring a security company, and some of that may have to do with cost. Figure out how much you can spend before you start looking at systems. You can install a basic system for less than $200.

Do some brand research. There are a number of manufacturers out there, and quality can vary greatly. GE do-it-yourself home alarm systems have a good reputation, as do those from ADT. Some off brands may save you some money, but check reviews to see how satisfied customers are with theirs.

Learn all of your options. There are plenty of add-ons for your alarm system, such as motion detectors, IP-based video cameras, and more. Figure out which options you can afford, and which will give your home the best protection.

Building a do-it-yourself home alarm system requires some careful planning. Take the time to do it right.

In an ideal world you’d have the latest and greatest in home security system technology. The fact is, however, not everyone can afford a state of the art home security system. And, while there are budget home security systems out there, sometimes they just aren’t terribly effective.

Here are seven relatively inexpensive things you can do today to protect your home:

Lie about it. Put signs in your yard that advertise you own a home security system. Burglars may not be able to recognize whether or not you actually have one, so putting up home security signs can be a deterrent to some criminals. In many cases, they’ll just move on to the next house.

Close your garage door. One of the most common entry points to your house is your garage door. Don’t leave it open at night or when you’re not home. It’s an invitation to burglars.

Be neighborly. If your neighbors are on good terms, they may be more likely to call the cops if they witness something suspicious. Neighborhood Watch programs have proven effective, too.

Store your valuables somewhere other than the bedroom. If a thief breaks in, he’s usually going right for the bedroom. That’s where most people store valuables. Put yours somewhere else.

Put in motion sensitive lighting. Burglars don’t like to operate in broad daylight, or in bright lights that shine one them suddenly at night.

Make it noisy. Simply leaving the television on when you’re gone can leave the impression that someone is home, and will deter some burglars.

Ask police for a safety checkup. Many local police agencies are willing to send someone out to do a home security and safety checkup. Take advantage of this if it’s offered in your area.

Your home’s security is in your hands. Even without hundreds or thousands of dollars to spend on a home security system, there are things you can do to protect yourself, your family, and your belongings. Follow these steps today to start securing your home and protecting it from burglars.

So, you’ve installed a do-it-yourself home security system. You’re one step closer to being fully protected. A home security system by itself, however, doesn’t guarantee your safety, and it doesn’t help you recover if your home is broken into. There are other important precautions you need to take.

Some of them – like locking your doors and windows, installing deadbolts, or putting lights on a timer when you’re not at home – are fairly intuitive. Other steps you can take might not be as obvious.

Here are some home security precautions you can take that you may not have considered:

Don’t leave a key out for burglars. Burglars know where to look for keys. Doormats mailboxes, and even flower pots or beds. They also know to recognize those fake pebbles in your garden.

Make a valuables inventory. If your home security system fails to prevent a burglary, you need to know what was there that may not be. Keep a detailed list of valued possessions, and include date of purchase, any serial numbers, and their value. Chances are your homeowner’s insurance company can help you put together a list.

Trim your shrubs. Don’t give burglars a place to hide.

Engrave your valuables. Consider engraving your driver’s license number onto your valuables. This will make it harder for criminals to sell them off, and make it easier for police to recover them.

Be a really good neighbor. Get to know your neighbors, and learn to watch out for each others’ homes. Consider Neighborhood Watch. These groups have been proven to significantly reduce break-ins.

Regularly test your home security system. That high-tech home security system can fail. Make sure you regularly test it to make sure that it’s functioning. Do all of the necessary system maintenance, and replace batteries when it’s time, too.

Do what you can to prevent burglaries. It’s the little things – like leaving a radio on during the day when you’re not at home or installing a motion-sensitive yard light – that will deter most criminals. Don’t be a victim; be diligent, and take these steps in order to secure your home.

The first question on everyone’s mind these days in home security is why one should have an alarm system in the first place. Are they really that helpful? The short answer is a resounding yes; the longer one concerns how having a security alarm system decreases the chances of a break in simply due to its existence in monitoring your property, and limits the amount of time an intruder can be present should a break in still occur.

So you’ve answered that question – having a security alarm system is simply prudent. Next comes the more involved question – what should an alarm system include, if one is purchased.

First of all, be aware that most security systems use a number of contacts or sensors positions at doors and windows. Indoor motion sensors primarily detect an intruder once they’ve entered your property, so they should be supplemented by sensors outside your home. Other basic elements of a successful home security system include the control panel, which connects your security system to a monitoring service and to its source of power; and a keypad where you’ll set and disarm your security system. Additional security features you may wish to include are smoke and fire detectors, panic buttons which can be activated in the event of an emergency, sensors or detectors that indicate any glass breakage, and closed circuit cameras that allow both monitoring and recording in your home or outside it.

Assuming you are utilizing a security system that contacts a monitoring service and/or local law enforcement authorities, you will obviously need a way to contact the central monitoring station, through your phone line or computer. You’ll also need to form an on-going contract with a monitoring company, whether it is the company that installs your security system, or a separate contracting entity. A monitored system works by alerting the monitoring station should an intrusion occur, allowing home owners a short window of time to deactivate their security system or notify the company of a false alarm. If they’re not notified, the monitoring company will then attempt to contact the homeowner, and if the home owner is not reached, law enforcement is alerted. An unmonitored security system relies solely on sirens or flashing lights which alert neighbors or passerbys that an intrusion has occurred and authorities should be notified. If you chose this type of system rather than a monitored security alarm, be sure to have placement visible to both your neighbors and the street.

The cost of such monitoring depends upon the security system you’ve installed, and the terms of the contract you’ve entered into upon installation. Some security companies will offer monitoring service for free or the system itself at no charge, should they also install the security system for you.

Remember, installing a security system for your home is a smart move; and being certain that it includes the components necessary to adequately protect your property is smarter still. Your security system should also include sturdy window and door locks; and be sure to set your security system when you’re home or away.

Home security is all about keeping your home, your loved ones, and your property safe from robbery. The loss of costly items is only one aspect of home security. Perhaps even more important is the prevention of personal violation, injury, and danger, which a home security system can go a long way toward preventing. Home security systems are a valuable, vital asset to keep your family and your valuables from harm. Remember that security systems can provide protection from fire, flood, and medical emergencies along with protection from robbery as well.

Home security systems should be evaluated by and installed in regard to the areas in which burglars are most likely to enter your residence. Studies have shown that most intruders or would be intruders will enter through a front door, by either forcing it open or simply kicking it in. Others enter through ground floor windows or the back door of the home which may offer more privacy and less lighting than a front door entrance. A smaller but still significant number of break ins occur through a basement or garage.

Once you’ve considered these entry points, be sure that the home security system you choose to install covers them all. Make certain that the system utilizes enough motion detecting sensors to monitor each area of your residence. Also be sure that the base unit that controls the motion sensors provides enough coverage to connect with sensors throughout your home. If you’re using a wireless system, be sure to always keep batteries charged and changed frequently. And in regard to the monitoring services that support your home security system, be sure that the monitoring company provides an adequate, rapid response time and will provide service call assistance if necessary to keep your system running smoothly.

Make your security system even more effective at preventing home robbery by keeping your yard landscaping neat, the trees and shrubs neatly trimmed. This way you’ll eliminate hiding places for a would be intruder who is either staking out your property or seeking the right places to wait for entrance, and escape notice coming or going from your property. Keep your lawn mowed and your property free of debris such as free flyers and neighborhood newspapers. Don’t encourage a potential invader to think that your property is unattended or uncared for an easy target.

Motion activated lights will not only alert you to the presence of anyone on your property, they will also signal a burglar to go elsewhere. No potential invader will want to be illuminated in bright light on a property without any overgrown trees or bushes to hide behind.

Lastly, whether you are home or away, be sure that once you’ve installed a security system in your home or business, that you turn the system on. Keep it activated at all times. And keep your doors and windows locked – don’t make it easy for a burglar to get inside.

Prevent home robberies: simply don’t make your property an easy target and intruders will look elsewhere.

While your friends, neighbors and family may already have purchased home security systems, you may be holding back, wondering why a home security system is important, and why so many others are jumping on the security system bandwagon. So let’s take a look at answering the question – why purchase a home security system?

First of all, statistics are on the side of making the home security “leap.” In the last five year period, there are annually over two million burglaries every year, resulting in an average of one burglary or home invasion every fourteen seconds. Each of these incidents results in an average cost to home owners of over a thousand dollars. This does not include, however, the untold costs of such an invasion: emotional damage, or perhaps physical threat or even harm to the victims.

With burglary occurring every fourteen seconds, what about fires? Every twenty seconds on average, a fire is reported.

A security system can prevent burglaries and invasions for occurring simply by the installation process. Burglars don’t choose homes that are difficult to invade – they choose homes that are easy to enter. Installing a security system means the odds of your home or business being burglarized greatly diminishes. And in regard to fires – an alarm system can save lives. It can also limit damage, by reporting smoke or fire when it is still at a containable level. Medical situations can also be improved through the use of a home security system. Adding medical alert features to your over all home security package can save lives: emergencies from heart attack to stroke can be resolved more favorably, with personal recovery improved and treatment more effective should it be offered rapidly.

Still, home and business owners alike may resist installing an alarm system. You may be thinking that the statistics don’t apply to your community or, cost may be the central reason to hold back. Note that a security system can actually save you money on many home insurance policies. And having a security system in place can also increase the resale value of your home or business as well. Keeping your home, loved ones, and property secure is of course valuable in and of itself.

Once you decide to install a security system, be sure that you’re including all the elements that are important to you in such a system. Don’t settle for merely sounding an alarm when a system utilizing motion detectors and a monitoring service are so much more reliable and efficient. Likewise, be sure to cover all of your family’s needs in a security package. Don’t forget the importance of medical alarms, or temperature and carbon monoxide monitoring and warning systems. Another feature you may want to consider is remote control and phone activation to set one’s security system when not on the premises. You may also want to include a paging system that can notify parents when a child has arrived at and entered the home ahead of them. And of course be sure that your alarm system has the right amount of motion sensors for the size of your home or business.

Unfortunately, your home security system isn’t self-sufficient when it comes to power. It’s going to need batteries. Now, most systems tell you when it’s time for your home alarm battery replacement. The system control panel may display a message such as “call technician” or it may flash a battery symbol. Depending on the type of system you’re working with, home alarm battery replacement may be a relatively simple endeavor or it may be something you need professional assistance with.

Here are the steps, generally speaking, that you’ll take in the home alarm battery replacement process:

Get the right replacement battery. The battery for your system isn’t something you’re going to find at the grocery store. You’re going to have to check with a hardware store or other type of do-it-yourself retailer. Check the owner’s manual to find out what kind of battery it is that you’re going to be looking for.

Start at the front panel. In most systems, the home alarm battery is located behind the cover of your control panel. There, you’ll see the battery with two cables attached to it.

Enter the engineer’s code. Generally speaking, your system is going to have a code used by engineers to disable the alarm on a temporary basis. If you don’t enter this code, it’s likely that you’re going to trip the alarm when you unclip the battery cables. If you don’t have the code, you can still replace the battery but you’re going to have the alarm going of while you do it.

Turn off the breaker. Shut down the power to the box. If you don’t have the engineer’s code, turning off the panel’s power supply should keep the alarm from tripping. Just make sure you turn the breaker back on after the home alarm battery replacement or you’ll wonder why you can’t make the system work again.

Replace the battery. Take the leads off the old battery and take it out. Put the new battery in, and replace the cables. If you didn’t use the engineer’s code, you’ll probably get a system message that says something like “tampering” or “zone open” and the alarm may continue to sound.

Replace the cover. Once you replace the home alarm system cover, this should cause what’s called a “tamper switch” to go back into place. This should cause the system message to go away and it should also silence the alarm, if it’s still going off.

There are alarm systems to prevent intruders from accessing your property, and systems to protect your home and family from fire, carbon monoxide and other environmental dangers. But if you have a pool or spa in your home or yard, a pool alarm is another security system you may need. Pool alarms are an important part of household safety, and while there are many types of pool alarm systems to choose from, every effective system must include some vital, basic components to keep your pool alarm functional and your pool safe.

First, every pool system must include a command station. This is the ‘brain’ of the system which controls and processes information sent from other parts of the pool alarm. The command station should be positioned away from the pool itself.

You’ll want to set up the remote keypad near the pool area itself. The key pad allows you to turn the alarm system on or off, and additionally set up a timer that allows the system to be turned on automatically. The status of your pool alarm will be displayed on the keypad.

Another element of your pool alarm is an underwater sensor or sensors. The sensors indicate if anything or anyone has fallen into the pool. These sensors are usually placed on the side walls of the pool. The number of sensors you need depends upon the size of your pool. An average full size pool should utilize four sensors for full coverage. In a jacuzzi you will probably only utilize one sensor. The sensors relay information about any activity in the pool to the command station unit.

Should inappropriate pool activity be taking place, the command center then activates an alarm, usually a loud horn that sets out audio over eighty-five decibels. Some systems also include flashing lights to alert pool owners.

Each of these elements in a pool alarm system are necessary. The sensors must be correctly placed and be of adequate number to provide coverage for your entire pool. The keypad and command station must be functional and properly connected to the sensor system to relay information about pool activity.

And why are pool alarms so important? One out of every five children’s drowning deaths occur because of inadequate pool supervision without an alarm system present. That’s a total of thirty percent of all childhood accidental life-loss. Pool alarm systems prevent these tragic accidents from occurring by alerting parents and guardians when someone enters a pool or spa.

Another way to keep children secure around a pool area is to utilize a wrist-band alarm device that is worn by a child and activates an alarm and flashing light from a portal base station when the child’s wrist band touches the water. This type of alarm system works well at locations away from home, too, if you or your family are staying at a hotel pool, near a lake or attending a pool party, this type of system can provide excellent, additional peace of mind.

One important element of home and business security is the use of an environmental security system. And one of the most important security alarms in the environmental area is a flood alarm warning system.

If you’re residing in an area that is prone to flooding, or in a climate that varies in temperature from hot to cold which can adversely effect water pipes and plumbing, investing in a flood security alarm system is a prudent idea.

All flood alarms have sensors which trigger an alarm system designed to alert you to potential floods and leaks. The sound these alarms generate alert home or business owners if there is a leak or if water reaches the sensors for any reason. Obviously, utilizing such a system is important for the safety of you and your family, and equally important in terms of minimizing damages to possessions and property.

Flood alarms function in a very simple fashion. Set the flood sensor at whatever level is appropriate – floor level or perhaps several feet up to alert you if a pond, ornamental fountain, pool, or other water producing unit is about to over flow or crests a safe level. Most flood alarms are manufactured using heavy, water proof plastic, with screws binding the device to prevent any water from damaging the actual alarm system. Most such alarms also utilize battery rather than electric power with battery components water tight to prevent shorting.

Although such flood security alarm systems are basic in construction and functionality, their simplicity doesn’t mean they’re not effective. In fact these simple alarms can save home and business owners a great deal of money in preventing or limiting flood damage. You can set your alarm to provide notification the moment moisture reaches the device – they can be set to let you know if as little as one thirty-second of an inch of water has reached it. This offers a significant lead time between, for example, a leak from a broken water pipe simply creating a damp carpet or the same pipe flooding a room and destroying computers, televisions, or other possessions.

Flood alarms quite literally can allow you to stop flooding before items or property are severely damaged. Even a short amount of warning time can allow you to act quickly enough to contain a leak or actually stop it. Eliminating possession loss is just one useful element of such an alarm system. The early warning from a flood alarm can also prevent mold growth which not only damages property and possessions but can also be a major health risk for your family. Remember, setting a flood alarm near any potential leak source allows you fast access to stop further damage to your property, remove near by possessions from harm’s way, and keep your family safe from hazards due to water damage.

Security systems are always utilized to protect your property from an intruder. Water sensor security is designed to successfully protect your property from a particularly destructive intruder – flooding.
